Califorian Bungalow renovation gets the right mix of charm & modern elements.
Why I love this home – it’s an original Californian Bungalow renovation in inner west Sydney, still retaining beautiful heritage aspects while redesigning with a more open plan and contemporary finish. The use of white timber glazed doors and extra height highlight window’s, to the alfresco outside bring in ample natural light.
The California Bungalows were based on the American bungalow design and were particularly popular in Australia from approximately 1913 to the 1940s. This style marks the beginning of American influences in housing as Australians experienced greater exposure to American popular culture.
The Californian prototypes were based on ‘craftsman’ principles and were constructed of natural-looking materials.

Modern Woodfire place:
The raked ceiling to the open plan, kitchen, dining and lounge/ fireplace area, define the area and give a dramatic open feeling. Integrating the Escea fireplace into the cabinetry is no mean feat. The Escea gas fireplace has all the rustic charm of a wood burner but without the mess or maintenance. The Escea uses powdered direct vent technology, drawing from outside the home into it’s sealed unit, keeping your home free of any fumes and slim line body is cool to touch. So you don’t have to worry about small pets or humans hurting themselves.
The herringbone timber flooring gives a warmth undertone to the whole palette. The use of sheers, will help with heat transfer via the glazed doors, although I would also recommend a recessed Cellular style blind within the window revel for nighttime to retain as much heat as possible. See Verasol for further info on cellular ranges.
