Apartment living, the future for Perth, what if it looked like this?
If this is what we can create here in Perth with apartments, then sign me up! Perth people in the past have resisted apartment living, but I feel the tides are turning.
I’m all for a minimal style of living, but a sanctuary that brings health and well-being evolved into beautiful interiors, then I’m a happy gal. With Perth in a rental crisis and feeling growing pains, we know we need to create more apartment living that’s at an affordable reach. With councils on board, and millennials crying out for these types of properties, it is an achievable outcome. But what if we took it to the next level and focused on healthy and designed well-being spaces with a sense of spirit instead of just profits?

Toronto Interior designer Andrea Kantelberg 5 years ago was trying to pitch to developers a healthy condo designed, there was little to no interest. But since the pandemic fast forward and “there is endless interest”. With the pandemic, we were all forced to spend 90% of our time indoors and we have had to really think do we love where we live, can I also work from home. This has onset a chain reaction which will most probably change the way we buy, rent and live in our homes.
Andrea Kantelberg, via her design firm evolved living fitted out an aprox 200 sqm prototype apartment dubbed the WELLington. It has a basis around bringing in only sustainable and de-materialized materials within the interior. Dematerialization is the reduction of materials used in a product to limit the overall environmental impact. Hence the use of the humble material plywood in creating the kitchen carcass, and in the end Andrea specified plywood doors to match. Even the multi-hued Italian marble countertops are graveyard slabs. Meaning these pieces used were soon to be disposed of, and was utilised in the kitchen benchtop and bathroom vanities.
The Kitchen design also enhanced with a huge natural stone boulder, to form part of the kitchen design. Which apparently needed 7 guys to lift into place.

Scientists are learning that we are now exposed to a lot more harmful electromagnetic waves, as our need for technology grows this isn’t going anywhere any time soon. ‘What a lot of people don’t realize is that dirty energy is affecting our cells/bodies and can cause inflammation’ So implemented EMF and RF customised systems are used in the apartment to minimise exposure to necessary frequencies and waves.
Interior lighting and sound solutions are specially designed to enhance the feel and space of the apartment. With implementation of circadian lighting systems to mimic the natural lighting cycle in an effort to sync the body clock with natures rhythms. Creating a customised lighting design for day time, which you hope is minimal as natural light is mainly used. But at night time, a mixture of task lighting but them soft ambience systems, can be adopted. In fact the bedrooms where specifically designed to be placed in the east side, so morning light can stream into bedrooms, to help you naturally feel into your body’s natural rhythms.

Bringing in plants is a great way to help clean the air, nuture wellbeing and provide bauty and keeping a strong connection to nature inside and outside the home. Then to also help further air purifier systems are incorporated with the air conditioning systems, so there’s peace of mind you’re breathing in quality clean air. The water quality is also another aspect to consider, Perth water is only just considered drinkable, and to get it to this level a lot of chemicals need to be added to kill bacteria and toxins. Again it’s not advisable to drink unfiltered water here in Perth, so setting up a water filtration system within the kitchen for drinking and cooking and then going 1 step further filtering water to the shower and baths.
The colour palette also plays an important role in generating a sense of serenity. Colour materials and objects, furniture all play a part in the psychology of spaces and impacts the way we feel. We understand there is a spirit quality that comes from within us that is linked to our built environment and of the interiors we inhabit.

Kantelberg didn’t shy away from sourcing second hand furniture. An Olive -hued 80’s era sofa purchased in great condition, second hand. Herman Miller chairs were re-upholstered only specifying a low chemical free fabric.
The main bedroom, has rose quartz placed under the flooring, while moonstone and sand was placed in the corners of the ceiling, helping to keep the room within a higher calmer vibration. There’s also a wireless aromatherapy system with 2 organic blends of oils, in daytime is an uplifting energetic smell with a night switches to a calmer oil. There’s also a inf red personalised sauna designed in the bathroom. The bedrooms also have extra acoustic materials in walls, to insulate sound further to create a sleeping sanctuary.
Maybe this is the new way of living, where peoples health and wellbeing is placed ahead of profits. Respects our planet and uses the built environment to enhance and improve our quality of life. Imagine if Perth developers had this mindset at the top of their agenda’s. Imagine Perth leading the way in future of apartment living. It’s all a possibility. If I had to choose an apartment to live in or even design for a client, this is what it would look like.
