My mission is to collaborate with clients to design contemporary and sustainable homes that improve the health of my clients; their families and the planet. As a designer, I have a responsibility to research where and how all these individual materials/ finishes and furnishings are made and created.
Yes sure a designer might not be for everyone, but I’m guessing since you’re here because you appreciate and know what good design is. Builders build what is on the plans and while they are technical thinkers there not necessarily creative thinkers. My role as a designer is to absorb from you what you want to create, which usually involves shrinking a massive amount of ideas down to a consistent look that you are after, then creating spaces that reflect your lifestyle. My role, in essence is creating that amazing feeling when you walk through your front door and you love coming home.
Sustainable design is all about a set of design principles based on your local environment and climate zone. Perth’s sustainable design needs to include passive solar design elements which effectively uses the natural elements of sun, cool breezes and shading to cool your home in summer and warm your home in winter.
The main aim in winter time is designing northern sunlight to enter the living areas (kitchens, living, dining) in your home and heat being absorbed (thermal mass) into the concrete slab or tiled flooring. Then in Summer time, designing effective shading barriers, placing windows in correct locations to allow breezes to flow through the home to naturally cool down the home.
Also including other features such as insulation, solar roof vents, ceiling fans, photovoltaic systems, energy and water efficient appliances, effective window treatments, glazing locations, grey water reuse, rainwater tanks, careful landscaping with low allergen and low VOC finishes can all be integrated to create a contemporary home that requires little to no energy or water costs and allows us to open up our homes and enjoy the natural resources available.
The way the home interacts with it’s surroundings and other elements (sun, wind, shade) have a profound affect on the feel and energy of a home, it’s one of the first considerations when designing a renovation. In the design stage I spend time assessing the inherent qualities of the building and where possible working to transform what already exists. Often changing the layout of walls and working within the same building envelope, by adopting a better flow through spaces there is no need to extend or build a second storey.
For me to create a tailored design solution, I will get to know you and your family, the way you currently enjoy your existing home and the requirements of the way you want to live. We discuss needs, preferences and objections collaborating together to design a bespoke solution focused on the relationship between you and your home.
Studio McQueen enjoys the challenge of designing highly functional kitchens, which really become the ‘hub’ of the family home. Creating an escape relaxed environment by day which can also be transformed to cater for entertaining friends by night. With focus around durable finishes, ergonomically intuitive, easy to clean, minimal water and energy use.
The modern Bathroom needs to be practical, with plenty of storage for family bathrooms and even a hint of Luxury for the main Ensuite. Sunlight and ventilation are also key design aspects, reducing the need for heavy cleaning chemicals due to mould build up from moisture.
Studio McQueen has a keen eye for inherent quality. This may be restoring, re-using or re-interpreting existing elements from your home to ensure your interior is an authentic reflection of you, not what may be trending in magazines at the time. “buy well, buy once” is a motto we live by. Where the scope allows we love to source handmade items directly from local or overseas artisans. These pieces then form a part of the unique feature about your home.
The colour palette is one of my favourite aspects of any home renovation. Simply selecting a new refreshed colour palette can be all a retro-fit needs to elevate into the contemporary now. The materials and colour palette can make or break the feeling of a home and therefore affects how it’s inhabitants interact with the space.
Delving into the world of playfulness, colour and adventure is an exciting part of what can be achieved in a family home. Creating designs that embrace little ones and make life for busy families a little easier, is what I focus on. I know as a mother myself, how important incorporating creative nooks and spaces can be to encourage
